Vail Health’s Transition to Practice Program is unlike any other in the country. As an independent community hospital, we are able to address and support the unique challenges our New Grad RNs may face. This program is designed to increase the confidence and competence of graduates, improve professional adjustment, and decrease burnout. Tailored curriculum in cohorts of 4-10 residents makes for a personalized experience. 
Yes—as a nursing student, you are eligible to apply for the Transition to Practice Program. You should plan to apply approximately 3-6 months prior to graduation. 
Please attach a resume that includes:
  • Relevant clinical rotations, clinical practicum, nurse extern/intern experiences including whether the format was virtual or in-person, the hospital and department in which the hours were completed, and the total number of hours for each experience.
  • Additional degrees in fields other than nursing.
  • Professional work experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Leadership roles.
  • Membership in professional nursing organizations.
  • Fluency in languages other than English.
  • Pertinent volunteer experience or community work.
Vail Health’s New Grad RN position is posted as one single job posting; “Registered Nurse Resident.” During your application, you’ll have the opportunity to select your top choices from the departments listed. The TTP Coordinator will call applicants and discuss available departments and facilitate interviews. After the interview process, the department leaders, TTP Coordinator, or Human Resources will reach out to you with hiring decision.
As a Pathways to Excellence designated organization, Vail Health prides itself on taking a shared governance approach to the selection process of hiring new staff, which includes the interview. The interview will be conducted in person and will consist of nursing leaders and a peer panel representing the department. 
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association and a valid Colorado or compact state Registered Nurse license. 
Vail Health is open to hiring both Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree graduates, with a preference for BSN graduates. Vail Health encourages you to pursue your BSN by offering tuition reimbursement and loan repayment. 
Yes– out-of-state candidates are eligible to apply to Vail Health’s Transition to Practice Program. However, if accepted into the program, you must be licensed in the state of Colorado prior to the deadline provided. We highly recommend you apply for licensure to the Colorado Board of Nursing at the time of NCLEX testing to avoid delays. Applicants can sit for the NCLEX exam in any state, regardless of where you are applying for licensure. Applying for licensure by endorsement after being issued an out-of-state license will take additional time and may delay your ability to meet the residency program timeline requirements.

Nurse Residents who have not passed their NCLEX exam and receive their RN license by the start date of the program are not eligible to start the program. It may be an option to defer to the next start date.
No, you must be licensed in Colorado prior to your hire date.
Yes– any potential RN Residents are welcomed to shadow. Email the TTP Coordinator ttpcoordinator@vailhealth.org for any questions. 
No– as part of best practices, we only accept New Grad RNs within one year of graduation into the TTP Program. Please visit our Careers page for the most up-to-date job opportunities.

Nurse Residents work a full-time schedule of 36-40 hours per week, on average, during the orientation period. Some work weeks will vary depending on staffing needs and TTP requirements. Your schedule after orientation will be based on department requirements and department leader needs.
Yes– Nurse Residents are full-time, professional nurse employees. Thus, the schedule will include a variety of shifts, including but not limited to nights, weekends, holidays, and sometimes call. Most New Grad RN positions are nightshift. Your individual schedule will be determined by department leadership.
Nurse Residents are full time Vail health employees, and as such are eligible for full time benefits. Employee benefits may also include an annual wellbeing reimbursement, recreation discounts, existing student loan repayment, tuition assistance, specialty certification reimbursement, annual supplemental educational funds, employee assistance program, and pet insurance. 
The Transition to Practice Program is one year in length.
The duration of orientation for New Grad RNs varies depending on the complexity of the nursing role and department. You will be paired with a preceptor(s) for several weeks or months. Orientation length can be adjusted to meet the needs of the learner. 
All Nurse Residents at Vail Health are started at the same base wage, as indicated on the application. 
Yes– there is a two-year commitment to Vail Health. Vail health invests significantly in your success. Should you choose to leave prior to your two year commitment, a prorated, $10,000 payback is associated with this commitment.
Vail Health is committed to supporting all staff, including New Grad RNs, in professional development opportunities. Many opportunities exist, which you will be educated on throughout your onboarding and Transition to Practice program. 
Yes. As part of the Transition to Practice Program, New Grads RNs are part of Vail Health’s mentorship program. Nurse Residents are paired with experienced nurses who provide guidance, support, and a wealth of practical knowledge during and even after the completion of the TTP program. A nurse mentor is separate from a preceptor.
