Anesthesia Partners of Colorado (APC) is comprised of board certified anesthesiologists specializing in multiple disciplines to provide world-class perioperative medicine for patients undergoing surgical procedures in the Vail Valley. APC is committed to delivering the most advanced anesthetic techniques with compassion and care. Our physicians apply the most recent evidenced-based therapies to their practice, which not only influences patients' surgical experiences, but also directly affects their outcomes.

Anesthetics reduce or prevent pain during surgery. There are four main types of anesthesia:
  • Local anesthesia numbs one small area of the body. The patient stays awake and alert.
  • Conscious or intravenous (IV) sedation uses a mild sedative to relax the patient and pain medicine to relieve pain. The patient stays awake, but may not remember the procedure afterward.
  • Regional anesthesia blocks pain in an area of the body, such as an arm or leg. Epidural anesthesia, which is sometimes used during childbirth, is a type of regional anesthesia.
  • General anesthesia affects the whole body. The patient falls asleep and feels nothing. Patients have no memory of the procedure afterward.
The type of anesthesia your doctor chooses depends on many factors, including the procedure you are having and your current health.
