1980   Vail's clinic is named Vail Valley Medical Center. In the first year as a full service hospital, 350 surgical operations are performed with 25 full-time physicians on staff.
1979   Construction of a new wing is completed and the clinic begins to accommodate obstetrics, general surgery and orthopaedics.
1967   The clinic moves to West Meadow Drive and the Mill Creek Court Building becomes the central supply and purchasing area. Board members begin fundraising to accommodate the growing needs of the hospital as it serves an ever-increasing population.
1965   Dr. Tom Steinberg is hired as Vail's first full-time doctor and opens a small clinic in the Mill Creek Court Building.
1962   As the Vail ski area opens, the founders of the resort contract a doctor for the winter months to provide medical care to skiers, setting up an office in what is now the kitchen at the Red Lion restaurant.

Nowadays on average 500 babies are born at Vail Valley Medical Center annualy but in the early years of VVMC, formerly Vail Clinic, things were a little different. The clinic was located on Bridge Street where the Red Lion is today then moved to its current location on West Meadow Drive in 1967. While the clinic did not offer obstetrics until around 1979, there are stories of babies being born in the area when the commute to hospitals in Leadville, Glenwood Springs or Denver was not possible. Vail Clinic's name was changed to Vail Valley Medical Center in 1980.

As proud parents will tell you, there is something “cool” about having a Vail baby. It’s as if being born in Vail ingrains a natural athletic ability, an adventurous spirit and a level of happiness and kindness that Valley dwellers are known to exude.

The fate of a Vail Baby is sealed with a VVMC "I'm a Vail Baby" keepsake. From onsies in the 80's to beanies today. All Vail babies receive a priceless keepsake to remind them of where their life began and the special significance that it holds.
