Biography

Dr. Backus is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in adult foot and ankle care. His clinical interests include ankle impingement, ankle instability, syndesmosis injuries, osteochondral lesions of the talus, ankle arthritis, and foot and ankle trauma. Dr. Backus also has a special interest in treating sports injuries in athletes of all abilities. He enjoys working collaboratively with his patients and getting them back to their goals as quickly, but as safely as possible.

Dr. Backus attended the University of Illinois a nd Kings College London and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Following his undergraduate graduation, he was awarded a Cancer Research Training Fellowship at the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Backus then attended Duke University for medical school and completed a residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. While in residency, he was selected as a resident scholar for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Annual meeting. Following residency, Dr. Backus completed a Foot and Ankle Fellowship at the Steadman Clinic under the direction of Thomas O. Clanton, MD. Prior to joining The Steadman Clinic surgical staff, he was an Assistant Professor at Washington University Orthopedics and previously in private practice in the Denver area. Dr. Backus was recognized by his peers as a Castle Connolly Top Doctors in the St. Louis area from 2021-2023.

He has authored multiple peer reviewed articles and book chapters. He has presented and taught on a national level and serves on the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Board of Directors. Dr. Backus research interests include syndesmotic anatomy and injuries, ankle instability, Achilles tendon rupture treatment, posttraumatic arthritis, osteochondral lesions of the talus, and foot and ankle trauma.
