Vail Valley Medical Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. It is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of community and hospital leaders. The Vail Valley Medical Center Board of Directors, administration, employees and physicians are committed to continuous quality improvement, the centerpiece for creating an organization that provides excellence to each patient we serve.

Vail Valley Medical Center Executive Team

Doris Kirchner, President & CEO
Doris has more than 30 years of health care experience with an additional ten years of senior management experience in the private sector. She graduated from William Jewell College with a BSN in nursing and received a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Kansas.

Doris has held various management positions in nursing administration and quality and risk management. She was the chief operating officer at VVMC from 1986-1994, and during that time, she led the recruitment team for Dr. Richard Steadman’s relocation to Vail. She left her position for a healthcare consulting role with Quorum Health Services in Nashville, where she worked with hospitals, physician groups and hospital boards of directors. Doris joined KSL Recreation Corporation, a leader in the luxury sector of hospitality, in late 1997 as the corporate VP of human resources with oversight of 9,000 employees across the organization at its peak. Following her retirement from KSL, Doris returned to VVMC in 2008 as the interim COO and accepted the role of CEO role in 2009.  In addition to her duties at VVMC, Doris serves on the Board of Directors for the Colorado Hospital Association.

Kirchner

Nicholas Brown, Vice President of Howard Head Sports Medicine
Nico joined Howard Head Sports Medicine in 2007 as a seasonal physical therapist. By 2009, he was promoted to clinic director of the Edwards office, where he played a role in the clinic design, as well as the implementation of new processes for the Outpatient Surgery Center. In the fall of 2012, Nico became one of two vice presidents leading the organization’s nine clinics. He holds an undergraduate degree with a double major in environmental studies and Italian from Emory University and a master’s degree in physical therapy from Georgia State University. 

Brown

Peggy Carey, Vice President of Shaw Regional Cancer Center
Peggy joined VVMC as vice president of oncology in 2010. With 30 years of leadership in community health, Peggy’s experience includes building teams to care for patients in a hospital system and developing coalitions to address community and state health challenges. She has worked with local and state policy makers to influence resource allocations for screening, treatment and end of life care. Peggy has served on many boards and excels at leading community-based initiatives and working with agencies such as public health, hospice, physician groups, hospital systems and indigent care providers to address health concerns and service needs. Peggy received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Southern Oregon State College and a master’s degree in public administration/health care from Lewis & Clark College. She is a fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives.

Carey

Charlie Crevling, Senior Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer
Charlie has 25 years of healthcare finance experience at major medical centers, including Virginia Mason Medical Center, Mary-Hitchcock Memorial at Dartmouth, the University of Colorado Hospital, Exempla Healthcare, and Colorado’s Lutheran Medical Center. He holds an undergraduate degree in accounting and finance from the University of Washington and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from the University of Colorado.

Crevling

Brian Foster, Chief Information Officer
Brian joined VVMC in 2012 as the chief information officer responsible for the information technology department and VVMC’s clinical and business applications/systems. He holds an undergraduate degree in computer science from Regis University and an MBA from the University of Colorado. Brian brings 37 years of technology and leadership experience that includes a 20-year military career with the USAF, maintaining sophisticated aircraft weapon systems and managing technology projects around the globe. Following his military career, Brian began serving in healthcare in 1996 as the director of IT at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, CO. Since, he has served as a CIO in New Mexico and Arizona, and prior to joining VVMC, he worked at the Mayo Clinic in Wisconsin for six years.   

Foster

Dr. Barry Hammaker, Chief Clinical Officer
Barry first became acquainted with VVMC as a part-time trauma surgeon at Mountain Surgical Associates in 2004 and came on as full-time provider in 2006. In addition to his role as CCO, he is the chief medical officer and a trauma surgeon. Barry received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency and internship in general surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. Barry served as group surgeon in the 528th U.S. Army Artillery Group in Cakmakli, Turkey; as chief of the department of surgery at Irwin Army Community Hospital in Fort Riley, Kansas; four tours of duty in Operation Iraqi Freedom and three tours in Operating Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan; and chief of general surgery at Evans Army Community Hospital in Fort Carson, Colorado. He left the Army in 2006 as a lieutenant colonel after serving 16 years. 

Hammaker

Laura Millard, Administrator of Vail Valley Surgery Center
Laura serves as the administrator of Vail Valley Surgery Center in Vail and Vail Valley Surgery Center in Edwards. She is a registered nurse and also holds a degree in organizational management from Colorado Christian University. She is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality. 

Laura joined VVMC in 2006 and has 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry, with the majority in leadership positions. She began her career as a surgical intensive care nurse at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas and emergency nurse with the Methodist Health System in Dallas and Seton Medical Center in Austin prior to moving into healthcare administration. She spent several years as a governmental healthcare auditor and in leadership positions in the insurance industry, including as a manager at CIGNA HealthCare of Colorado, prior to moving into ambulatory surgery center administration with HCA.  She has also served as the CEO of a surgical hospital.  

Millard

Luke O’Brien, Vice President of Howard Head Sports Medicine
Luke is the vice president of clinical physical therapy in Vail and the rehabilitation coordinator for Dr. Richard Steadman. He holds a bachelor’s degree in physiotherapy from the University of Queensland and a master of sports physiotherapy from LaTrobe University. He is a sports certified specialist as recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association.

Since joining Howard Head Sports Medicine as a physical therapist in 2002, Luke has focused on the treatment of lower extremity musculoskeletal disorders with a specialization in the treatment of the knee. He has served as an assistant physical therapist for the US Ski Team and as a consultant to teams including Manchester United and Barcelona football clubs, the New York Mets, and the Portland Trail Blazers. Luke has published numerous articles and text book chapters and has an adjunct faculty position at the University of Colorado. 

OBrien

Rick Smith, Senior Vice President & Chief Administrative Officer
Rick has 25 years of human resource and leadership experience with companies such as Vail Resorts, Gerry Baby Products, The Pillsbury Company, and Frito-Lay. He holds an undergraduate degree in business administration from Regis College and a master’s degree in labor and industrial relations from the University of Illinois. Prior to joining Vail Valley Medical Center, Rick was a partner with Pilot Advisors, where he worked with companies across the country, providing advice and service in improving culture, building cohesive leadership teams, and offering leadership training and executive coaching.

Smith

Alice Weydt, Vice President of Patient Care Services
Alice started her career as a staff nurse at Carbon County Memorial Hospital in Red Lodge, MT, providing bedside nursing care and working in the operating room. Since then, she has served as the director of nursing at Arlington Municipal Hospital in Arlington, MN and patient care manager at Immanuel-St. Joseph-Mayo Health System in Mankato, MN, where she went on to become the director of patient care services. She was recruited by Creative Health Care Management, a nursing consulting firm in Minneapolis, MN specializing in care delivery and Relationship-Based Care, then returned to acute care at Arcadia Municipal Hospital-Mayo Health System in Arcadia, WI before making the move to Vail. Alice holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Montana State University, a certification in patient care administration from the University of Minnesota, and a master’s degree in health care administration from Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, WI.
