Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve functionality, but may also be done to achieve a more normal appearance. Dr. Jeffrey Resnick is a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 25 years of experience and an expert in breast reconstructive surgery and skin cancer surgery. Reconstructive surgery is not only meant to improve physical appearance, but has psychological benefits as well, and is thought to promote a sense of wellness. Each patient's unique goals, lifestyle and medical history are considered when determining the appropriate surgery.
Reconstructive surgery may be covered by health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary greatly.
Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body to improve the patient's appearance and self-esteem. It is not covered by health insurance.
