The human endocrine system consists of a number of glands that produce and secrete hormones to control the body's metabolism, growth, sexual development and function. Endocrinology is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to those glands and hormones.
VVMC's board-certified endocrinologists treat the following adult diseases:
- Thyroid disorders including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
- Metabolic diseases and weight disorders
- Hormonal imbalances requiring hormone replacement therapy
- Adrenal gland disorders
- Osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency
- Pituitary disease
Dr. Melvin Stjernholm diagnoses and creates treatment plans for conditions such as growth disorders, obesity, low testosterone, osteoporosis and various thyroid disorders, among others. Dr. Stjernholm is also trained to practice Diabetology and works out of the Frisco Specialty Clinic.
Dr. Rebecca Adochio treats all aspects of endocrinology, including thyroid, pituitary, adrenal, parathyroid, and metabolic bone disorders. She has expertise in thyroid cancer treatment and ultrasound guided biopsy of thyroid nodules. Dr. Adochio also has a special interest in treating disorders of metabolism and diabetes mellitus and works out of the Edwards office.

Endocrinology appointments are available in Vail, Edwards and Frisco. While no referral is necessary to book an appointment, patients are encouraged to contact their insurance company to determine whether a referral is required for optimal insurance coverage.
