ThinkFirst Injury Prevention

ThinkFirst Injury Prevention

Vail Health has embraced the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation's award-winning, evidence-based program to help people learn to reduce their risk for injury.

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability among children, teens and young adults. The most frequent causes of these injuries are motor vehicle crashes, violence, falls, sports and recreation. What might surprise you is that most injuries are preventable. Simple actions, such as wearing a seat belt, reducing distractions while driving, wearing a helmet on a bicycle and taking other safety precautions can prevent many serious injuries from occurring.

Vail Health's ThinkFirst Programs in Eagle County

The goal of the program is to increase knowledge and awareness of the causes and risk factors of brain and spinal cord injury, injury prevention measures, and the use of safety habits.
Our ThinkFirst program partners with Vail and Beaver Creek Mountain Safety to provide presentations at the local elementary schools to promote the Skier Responsibility Code and discuss helmet safety.  We also partner with the ski areas to promote National Skier Safety Month in January.
Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injury deaths for people over age 65, and a leading reason for emergency room visits in the United States each year. Falls can cause brain injuries, hip fractures and other devastating consequences. Many falls could be avoided through simple preventative measures.  Evidenced based classes offered through Vail Health and the Eagle County Well and Wise program include ThinkFirst for Falls, Stepping on and Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention.
ThinkFirst participates in many community events including The Kids Adventure Games, Eagle Flight Days, and Gypsum Daze. At these events, we educate community members about the brain and how to be safe as well as helmet distribution.
