The Ins and Outs of Hormone Replacement Therapy
- Hot flash! Bone density! Hormones! The changes in estrogen levels in women going through menopause have interested doctors and patients for nearly a century. Synthetic estrogen was developed in the 1920s, and by the mid-1930s it was being used to relieve menopausal symptoms. In the mid-1960s, the book "Feminine Forever" touted the use of synthetic estrogen as a way to maintain youth and femininity. The book greatly increased the demand for hormone replacement therapy. Celebration In Pink
- On March 3, 2011, Lisa Middlebrook got the devastating news that she had breast cancer. After a trying year of treatment and recovery, and exactly one year after her diagnosis, Middlebrook skied at Pink Vail to help support the Shaw Cancer Center. The past year was the toughest of her life - undergoing a double mastectomy, four rounds of chemotherapy, 26 radiation treatments, losing her hair and missing out on traveling to visit family. Behind the Scenes at Shaw Regional Cancer Center
- The Shaw Regional Cancer Center is one of the most visible landmarks in Edwards. But aside from patients, not many people get to see how the place operates. First of all, if it wasn't for my good friend Buz Didier taking me to the Vail Valley Medical Center, I wouldn't be here writing this. Thanks, Buz Man! During my three wee... MORE →

"I can't tell the community how lucky they are to have a state-of-the-art medical center right here in the Valley," Glode said. "Patients have access to developing therapies and both Drs. (Patricia) Hardenbergh and (Alexander) Urquhart (of the Shaw) are also clinical assista... MORE →

Vail Health: Screening For Small Cancers
- When found early, breast cancer isn't a death sentence. The Shaw Regional Cancer Center recently acquired new technology, called a SonoCine machine, that it hopes will help find breast cancer earlier, when the cancer is smaller and more easily treated. The SonoCine is an automated whole breast ultrasound (AWBU) that detects small cancers. While a mammogram uses X-rays to detect cancers, the SonoCine uses sound waves. The SonoCine differs from the mammogram in that it is designed to pick up canc... MORE →

- One in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime, according to breastcancer.org.
