Dr. Robert F. LaPrade is a complex orthopaedic knee surgeon at The Steadman Clinic, as well as the Chief Medical Officer, Deputy Director of the Sports Medicine Fellowship Program and Director of the International Research Scholar Program at the Steadman Philippon Research Institute. With a concentration on complex knee injuries and previously failed surgeries, his specialty includes posterolateral knee injuries, PCL tears, revision ACL reconstructions, meniscal transplants, MCL injuries, knee osteotomies, fresh osteoarticular allografts, among other problematic and multifaceted injuries.
Selected as one of the "Top Doctors in America" by U.S. News and World Report in 2012 - a list that is comprised of less than just 1% of physicians in the entire U.S. - Dr. LaPrade has amassed a vast knowledge of sports medicine and is renowned for his treatment of high-caliber athletes. Dr. LaPrade finished medical school at the University of Illinois and carried out his residency at Michigan State University. He also completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at The Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. In 2003, Dr. LaPrade received a PhD from the University of Oslo in Norway for his work on The Anatomy and Diagnosis of Posterolateral Knee Injuries.
Prior to relocating to Vail, Dr. LaPrade was a professor in the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, where he was recognized for his collaboration with one of Europe's top sports centers at the University of Oslo, the Norwegian Olympic Center, and Dr. Lars Engebretsen. During his time in Minnesota, Dr. LaPrade also served as the team physician for the University of Minnesota Men's ice hockey team (National Champions in 2002 and 2003) and the men's baseball team.

Dr. LaPrade has developed effective surgical techniques for the reconstruction of posterolateral knee injuries, chronic patellar tendon tears, popliteus tendon and posterior oblique ligament injuries, medial knee injuries and double bundle PCL reconstructions of the knee. He has published more than 125 peer-reviewed scientific manuscripts in addition to 50 articles and book chapters. Dr. LaPrade has given over 400 professional presentations and is in high demand as a speaker at instructional course lectures worldwide.
In 2010, Dr. LaPrade was recruited and appointed to be the Director of Biomechanics Research for the Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, CO. His ongoing research strives to identify the anatomy and biomechanics of specific problems associated with the knee and has developed anatomic reconstructions and new surgeries for these problems based upon his findings.
Medical research in the area of PRP therapy (platelet-rich plasma), growth factors and stem cells to heal sports-related injuries is gaining notoriety among the mainstream press, due to high-profile athletes such as Kobe Bryant and Alex Rodriguez seeking treatment outside the United States. Dr. LaPrade led a successful international PRP/Biologic Treatment Symposium in Vail, CO, exploring the use of biologic treatments in sports medicine. Recognized as one of the up and coming frontiers of sports medicine, this new alternative form of treatment is of particular interest to Dr. LaPrade and will continue to be part of his ongoing research to treat those who endure chronic knee injuries and conditions.
Board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Dr. LaPrade has a Certificate of Added Qualification in sports medicine, and is a member of numerous national and international committees, including the AAOS, AOSSM, ESSKA, ISKAOS, AANA, and ICRS. He was honored by The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) with the 2012 Achievement Award, which is given to select surgeons that highlight their exceptional contribution to the field of orthopaedic surgery.
Dr. LaPrade and his wife, Sandy, have three sons who are all active athletes. He is an avid sportsman who strives to make working out part of his daily routine.
