Dr. Randy W. Viola is a hand, wrist and elbow doctor at The Steadman Clinic. With an interest in injuries and disorders of the hand, wrist and elbow, as well as a specialization in acute trauma and degenerative and sports-related injuries, Dr. Viola is considered an expert in the area of arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine of the lower arm extremities.
Using a precise skill and an innovative approach, Dr. Viola treats a variety of conditions and injuries of the hand, wrist and elbow, including the treatment for traumatic injuries to the tendons, nerves, bones, and joints. An authority in arthroscopic surgery, as well as microsurgery for acute and more complex cases, he also specializes in fracture fixation, soft tissue repair, reconstruction cases involving tendon transfers, nerve compression, vascular repairs, and the treatment and management of degenerative conditions of the hand, wrist and elbow such as arthritis and osteoarthritis.
Dr. Viola graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University in 1988 and completed his medical education at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. After completing his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Washington in Seattle, as well as his fellowship for sports medicine with The Steadman Clinic and a second fellowship for hand surgery with the Indiana Hand Clinic in Indianapolis, he entered into private practice in 1999 as an orthopaedic hand, wrist and elbow surgeon with The Steadman Clinic, where he has remained for the past 13 years.
Dr. Viola has been invited to lecture on a multitude of topics associated with sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery. His research has been published in numerous medical publications and scientific journals, such as the Journal of Orthopaedic Research, the Journal of Hand Surgery, the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, and the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery.
Dr. Viola treats many collegiate and high profile professional athletes for sports-related injuries primarily related to the hand, wrist and elbow. He serves as an upper extremity consultant to the United States Ski Team, MLB's Colorado Rockies, and to the NFL's Denver Broncos. A diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Viola is active in multiple professional societies including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the Hand Society.
A passionate outdoorsman, Dr. Viola and his wife reside in Vail, where he enjoys alpine skiing, biking and running.
