Trauma Services

In 2008, the Trauma Services Department is adding a full-time SBIRT Health Educator.   SBIRT stands for “Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment."  Statistics show that almost 50 percent of trauma patients have a positive blood alcohol concentration  and that excessive drinking and substance abuse are significant risk factors for traumatic injury.  The Health Educators' role will be to  universally screen trauma patients.   Those patients who are found to be at risk for alcohol or substance abuse will then be provided a brief intervention, and if necessary, a referral to treatment.

We have 4 trauma surgeons on staff full-time who are board certified and Fellows of the American College of Surgeons.
  • James Downey, M.D.
  • Reginald Franciose, M.D.
  • Barry T. Hammaker, M.D.
  • W. Andrew Lawrence, M.D.
The Trauma Services Department is responsible for maintaining the hospital’s Level III trauma designation.  Responsibilities focus on Outreach and Education, Quality Assurance, Improvement and Prevention. The department is staffed by a Trauma Program Manager, Registrars/Prevention Coordinator and Administration Technician.
