With some of the most respected surgeons in Colorado on our team, Vail Valley Medical Center is fortunate to be the home of Mountain Surgical Associates (MSA). Known for their expertise in emergency and trauma care, our surgeons are experts in:

  • General surgery: abdominal, thoracic and endocrine
  • Cancer surgery: breast, colon and rectal, endocrine, lung and melanoma
  • Laparoscopic surgery: hernia repair, gall bladder, colon and reflux disease
  • Trauma/critical care: around the clock diagnostic and therapeutic care for critically ill and injured patients

The Mountain Surgical Associates staff works closely with physicians at Shaw Regional Cancer Center in the early detection and treatment of cancer. We also offer a Wound Care Clinic and provide surgical assistance to orthopaedic; aesthetic and reconstructive; OB-GYN; gastroenterology; and ear, nose and throat specialists.

MSA is open Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 4:30 PM. Our after-hours on-call physician can be contacted by calling Vail Valley Medical Center at 970-476-2451. OUR DOCTORS

James Downey, MD, FACS - Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Dr. Downey graduated from UC Berkeley with honors before moving to Colorado. After graduating from the University of Colorado Medical School, he completed his surgical residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1997. Dr. Downey is certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. In addition, he is an instructor in Advanced Trauma Life Support and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Colorado. He practiced in Boulder for nine years before being recruited to bring advanced laparoscopic and breast surgery techniques to the Vail Valley. Dr. Downey is actively involved in many committees and departments at Vail Valley Medical Center, and travels yearly as a team physician with the US Ski Team.

Dr. Downey has special clinical interests in breast, endocrine, and minimally invasive surgery. He lives in Eagle Ranch with his wife and three children. When not at work, Dr. Downey can usually be found (with one or more members of the family) on the course, the river, or the slopes.

Reginald J. Franciose, MD, FACS – Dr. Franciose, a native of Massachusetts, graduated from medical school at the George Washington University School of Medicine with distinction in 1989. He completed his General Surgery Internship and Residency from the University of Colorado Health Science Center in Denver, Colorado. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. In addition to his surgical duties, he serves on the Board of Directors at Vail Valley Medical Center.

Dr. Franciose has special clinical interest in oncological (cancer) surgery. He lives in Vail with his wife and daughter.

Barry Hammaker, MD, FACS – Dr. Hammaker received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency at William Beaumont Army Medical Center.  Dr. Hammaker is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and specializes in advanced laparoscopic surgery, thoracic surgery, surgical endoscopy, and colon cancer screening. As a surgeon at Mountain Surgical Associates, Dr. Hammaker’s tenure at Vail Valley Medical Center includes Medical Staff President and Vice President and Operating Room Committee Chairman.

Before arriving to Vail, Dr. Hammaker performed 16 years of active duty military service, including multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2001 to 2005.

W. Andrew Lawrence, MD, FACS - Dr. Lawrence, a native of Virginia, received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with distinction from Virginia Military Institute in 1991. He graduated from medical school at the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the AOA Honor Medical Society. He received his surgical training at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from 1997 to 2002. Dr. Lawrence is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.  He is presently the Trauma Director and Co-Director of the Intensive Care Unit at Vail Valley Medical Center.

Dr. Lawrence has special clinical interest in advanced laparoscopic procedures, gastrointestinal surgery, endocrine surgery, and surgical critical care. He lives in Vail and is an avid golfer, skier, and fly-fisherman.

Jason Moore PhD., PA – Originally from the Philadelphia area, Jason Moore completed his undergraduate studies at Loyola College in Baltimore, Maryland before embarking on a career in medicine. After working as a river guide, ski patroller, and a paramedic, he earned his Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the Arizona School of Health Sciences, where he focused his training on emergency medicine and critical care. After accepting a position with the trauma/critical care team at Vail Valley Medical Center in 2004, Jason expanded his interests to the field of clinical research, which led to him earning his Ph.D. in Epidemiology/Public Health from Walden University and facilitated his continued passion for medical research. Current research interests include recreational trauma, as well as critical care topics, including infectious disease and the management of sepsis. Dr. Moore is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA), a fellow with the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and holds NCCPA Surgical Certification. Additionally, Dr. Moore is certified by the Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology and serves as Vail Valley Medical Center's epidemiologist.

Dr. Moore lives in Vail and is an avid outdoorsman. In his spare time, he enjoys the local mountains and has completed rafting descents of multiple Tibetan rivers.
