Pharmacy - Inpatient
In addition to two outpatient pharmacies, the Inpatient Pharmacy at Vail Valley Medical Center provides a wide variety of clinical services to physicians, nurses and patients. These services include dosing and drug selection information to nurses and physicians. The Inpatient Pharmacists also provide counseling services to patients while in the hospital and particularly at the time of discharge from the hospital. The Inpatient Pharmacists are all highly trained and skilled in providing drug information services. In addition to these clinical services, the Inpatient Pharmacy dispenses, compounds and prepares medications for patients while in the hospital. These medications range from tablets and capsules to complex intravenous fluids and nutrition for neonates. All the intravenous fluids are always prepared in a clean and sterile environment using an aseptic technique. Inpatient Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians are skilled and highly trained in preparing sterile intravenous solutions and must be certified for sterile preparation on an annual basis. There are eight Inpatient Pharmacists and four Inpatient Pharmacy Technicians. Each of the VVMC Inpatient Pharmacists have had at least 5 years of college training, while most hold Doctorate degrees in Pharmacy and have completed extra training in the form of residencies. Patients, nurses and physicians at Vail Valley Medical Center may contact the Inpatient Pharmacy at any time and request consultation about their medications. The information can include details about the correct dose and frequency, medication identification, drug-drug and drug-disease state interactions, allergy information and just about any other drug-related topic.
