Edwards, CO 81632In 2003 the Shaw Outreach Team, a coalition of volunteers whose mission is to support Shaw Regional Cancer Center patients, identified the need for illness-sensitive accommodations for patients traveling to Edwards, Colorado for treatment. The plan to construct the Cancer Caring house was formulated after considerable research and visits to other cancer centers, which revealed that nearly 80% of the nation's leading cancer treatment centers offer housing for patients. Working in partnership with the Shaw Regional Cancer Center and the Vail Valley Medical Center, the Shaw Outreach Team has embarked on a $4.2 million campaign to construct, equip, and endow the self-sustaining Jack's Place, a Cancer Caring House. Jack's Place is a 10,825 square-foot facility located adjacent to the Shaw Regional Cancer Center and provides cancer patients and a family member or caregiver with safe, convenient, and comfortable accommodations while receiving radiation and other treatments at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center. - Cancer is now the leading cause of death in the U.S. for people under the age of 85.
- The estimated number of new cancer cases in Colorado this past year (excluding basal and squamous cell skin cancers) was 15,200.
- At some time everyone will be touched by cancer.
- Cancer patients usually require six to eight consecutive weeks of radiation and/or chemotherapy.
- Every week 6 - 12 patients receiving treatment at the Shaw Regional Cancer Center request housing.
