Bringing New Life to the Mountains
When should I sign up for childbirth classes?
You should plan to have completed your classes by 36 weeks, which means you should be calling to register by the end of your 6th month.

Should my husband attend the childbirth classes?
Definitely!  Classes are designed to educate and prepare both the pregnant woman and her partner for labor and parenthood.

This is my second baby.  Are there any classes that I should take?
We offer a one hour Sibling Class every month, which is designed to prepare the sibling for the arrival of the new family member.  Parents are also welcome to take a refresher course, which often consists of one or several classes from the 4-week Childbirth Class.

I am hoping for a natural birth, are there any classes, which will help prepare me?
Yes, the 4-week Childbirth Class covers natural birth as well as medication options.   Also, an in-depth tour of the labor room is included which includes instruction on how to use the squat bar and birth balls and other props during labor.

I am having a planned c-section, should I still take any childbirth classes?
Yes, we recommend that couples take two out of the four classes in our 4-week Childbirth Class.  One class specifically covers epidural and caesarean birth, and the last class of the series includes a class on baby care and parenting.

Does the hospital offer any parenting classes?
We do not, but we are partnering with Eagle County to offer a class entitled “Bright Beginnings” every month which provides information to new parents on infant development, safety, local resources and postpartum changes and adjustments.  You can visit the Eagle County website Department of Health & Human Services to learn more about their other parenting classes and local community events.

I will have several family members in town for my birth, can they attend my birth, and will there be set visitor hours afterwards during which they can visit?
It is a couple’s decision when it comes to how many people they would like to have in their labor room.  However, most doctors only allow one support person, into the surgical suite during a Caesarean section.

After my baby is born, are there any visitation hours that my family and friends should be aware of?
The OB department has no set hours, and visitors are allowed throughout the day, and into the evening, but your nurse will inform visitors if you are sleeping or resting.

Can my friend’s children come to visit my new baby?
Unfortunately during the flu, or RSV season, only siblings are allowed into the Women and Children’s Center.

Does the hospital have a lactation consultant and any breastfeeding education?
Yes, the OB department has lactation consultants available to visit new moms and their babies during the hospital stay.  Moms can also visit a lactation consultant after discharge if any difficulties arise, and rent a breast pump if needed. We also offer a Breastfeeding and Infant Feeding seminar twice a month (once in Eagle and once in Vail) to prepare moms (and their partners) for the choices and possible challenges for feeding their newborn.   Visit our calendar for dates.

Is their any paperwork that I need to fill out for the hospital before my due date?
It is helpful for couples to pre-register prior to going into labor.  The proper forms can be obtained from your doctor or midwife, and turned into the Admission Department at the hospital.

If I want an epidural will I have to wait for an anesthesiologist if the hospital is busy?
Most of the time, we have a dedicated anesthesiologist for our OB department.  We always have an anesthesiologist on call for laboring women

After my baby is born, who will be checking on his health?
OB also has a dedicated pediatric hospitalist, whose entire purpose is to check on new babies and oversee their care while you are at the hospital.

What if my baby is born early or needs extra medical attention?
The Women and Children’s Center has a Level II Nursery which is equipped to handle most babies born after 32 weeks, or full term babies who have any health concerns or illnesses.  Our Level II Nursery including the Pediatric Hospitalits service and neonatal nurse practitioners, all lessen the likelihood that your newborn will need to be transported to a Level III facility if complications arise.
