Topper is one of the founding members of the Howard Head Sports Medicine Centers. He was the head exercise physiologist with the US Olympic Training Centers. Following the 1984 Olympics, Topper joined John Atkins and Dr. Richard Steadman, focusing efforts toward rehabilitating athletes and individuals from around the world. When they moved to Vail in the early '90s, Topper and JA treated Dr. Steadman's patients in a small room at the hospital before moving downstairs and growing their practice. When visiting the clinic, Topper can be found cracking jokes with patients and cheering up everyone's day with Starbucks deliveries. He can usually be found near water, fly-fishing or training the US Rafting Team.

John Atkins, known to most as JA, is the other founding member of the Howard Head Sports Medicine Centers. JA was the first full-time athletic trainer with the US Ski Team, helping athletes through the 1984 Olympics, where the US team had its best performance ever to date, JA began working with Dr. Steadman in Lake Tahoe, rehabing professional athletes from all over the world and built his practice with Topper when they moved to Vail. JA and his wife Ria enjoy spending time with their dogs and getting away to their boat in Ventura, CA.

Steve is the managing partner of the Howard Head Sports Medicine Centers. Steve completed his Masters in Physical Therapy at the University of South Dakota. He has published several articles on rehabilitation of the hip and knee and has presented on rehabilitation of the shoulder and knee. Recently married, Steve spent his honeymoon fly fishing in Alaska with his wife Melanie. When not working, Steve enjoys hunting, fishing, skiing, and hiking.

Scott Bartel, MSPT, SCS

Scott graduated with his MSPT from Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Since 2001, he has worked in our Breckenridge, Vail, and Edwards clinics and traveled extensively with the US Ski and Snowboard Teams. Scott is certified in Sports Therapy and specializes in treatment of the shoulder, knee, hip, and ankle. As Vail Clinic Director, Scott assures excellent clinical care and customer service for all patients. He has competed in various cycling events, including the Tour of the Gila and Vuelta de Bisbee. His passion for sports is reflected in his treatment of athletes of all abilities. Scott is married to our Sports Residency Director, Victoria Bartel

Gretchen Ebbeson

Gretchen joins Howard Head from Hampton, New Hampshire. She loves living in the valley and although she doesn’t have any pets of her own she loves dog sitting. Some of Gretchen’s biggest hobbies are shopping and watching the Red Sox play. When Gretchen isn’t working she can be found outdoors hiking or snowshoeing or in her kitchen finding new ways to cook vegetables.

Wayne joins the HHSMC team in a position recently created to improve the quality of care, clinical outcomes, and customer service provided at all HHSMC sites. As fullback for the University of Arizona Wildcats, he completed his career with a 29-0 win over the Miami Hurricanes in the 1993 Fiesta Bowl. After sustaining a serious neck injury, he turned his focus to healthcare, receiving his DPT from Northern Arizona University and MBA from the University of Arizona. Wayne is a Certified Orthopedic Specialist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. He recently relocated from Arizona with his wife Kim and their 2 children, who look forward to all that Colorado has to offer.

Angela Harrison

Although born in Alabama, Angela has been in the Vail Valley for 21 years. She is currently taking classes at Colorado Mountain College in business and computers and is working her way towards an associate’s degree. When Angela is not at work you can find her outside playing with her 5 year old daughter Kyra or hanging out with her many family members who also live in the Vail Valley.

Jason was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana University receiving both his Bachelors degree in Chemistry and a Masters degree in Health Administration. After working in Indianapolis for a number of years, he moved to Denver in 1999 to pursue a career opportunity in health care consulting. In the fall of 2001 Jason moved to Vail where he lived his ski-bum fantasy by working on the Vail Ski Patrol for five seasons. He is an avid fan of the Indianapolis Colts and the Colorado Rockies. On his free time Jason enjoys skiing, mountain biking, trail running and hunting.

Tina and her family moved from Kansas City to the Vail Valley last October. She received her B.S. from West Texas State University in 1993 and in June of 2007 she earned her Senior Professional in Human Resources certification. When Tina is not at work she can be found with her husband and kids out enjoying the various activities the Valley has to offer. She and her husband, Jeff, will be celebrating their 10th anniversary this September and they have 4 boys; Philip 6 yrs, Erich 4 yrs, Julius 3 yrs, and Christian 1 yr.

Alicia came to the Vail Valley from Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Alicia enjoys visiting her many family members in San Diego, California and tries to go there as often as possible. Some of Alicia’s personal accomplishment include competing in a Marine Corps Marathon and singing for President Clinton and Vice President Gore during college. Go Alicia!!! When Alicia is not working or visiting family you can find her outside on the golf course or skiing on Vail’s Headwall run.
