Howard Head Sports Medicine Center (HHSMC) is a privately owned company that provides rehabilitation services for the VVMC health care system. Our clinics are located in Eagle, Edwards, Beaver Creek, Vail, Frisco, Silverthorne, Breckenridge, Keystone, Gypsum and Denver. Our staff consists of 50 physical and occupational therapists who provide world class rehabilitation.
At HHSMC, we place an emphasis on quality care and creating a unique healing environment based upon our core values: integrity, empowerment, initiative and expertise. We look for therapists who possess these same core values upon which our clinic was built. We also believe that rehabilitation should be a fun experience and encourage a positive environment for both therapists and patients.
Our largest referral source is the Steadman Hawkins Clinic with whom we have worked with closely for over 25 years. Our close relationship with this world renowned orthopaedic clinic provides a very unique experience for our therapists. We work together to develop cutting edge therapy programs for surgical procedures that have been pioneered and perfected by the physicians at Steadman Hawkins. The Steadman Hawkins Research Foundation provides unique access to cutting edge research in biomechanics, clinical outcomes, rehabilitation and basic science in orthopaedics and sports medicine. Please visit www.steadman-hawkins.com and www.shsmf.org for further information.
Vail: Our Vail Clinic is located within Vail Valley Medical Center. The clinic is open 7 days per week for both inpatient and outpatient rehab. Most therapists work four, 10 hour days including one weekend day. Twenty PTs (Physical Therapists), five OTs (Occupational Therapists), two ATC (Athletic Trainer Certified) and two aides work out of the Vail Clinic.
Inpatient rehabilitation - is a mixture of acute orthopaedic and medical patients; VVMC is a 58-bed hospital with a very high volume of orthopaedic surgery & injuries. At this time, eighteen orthopaedic surgeons operate at VVMC. From December to April, our orthopaedic caseload increases significantly. On average, each therapist sees 12-16 patient visits per day.
Outpatient rehabilitation - has a high volume of orthopaedic and sports medicine patients including post-surgical knee, hip and shoulder patients. Patients are scheduled every forty-five minutes throughout the day. Outpatient therapists are typically scheduled for three days of patient care and one day of ER or Walk-In coverage.
Walk-Ins: In an effort to make immediate treatment available to our patients, a “walk-in” therapist is scheduled in most clinics to see unscheduled patients who are referred for therapy. Walk-in patients are usually referred from occupational health, an orthopedist or the ER. A large percentage of these patients are from out of town and are seen for a one-time visit to start and direct, or redirect, their therapy.
Eagle/Edwards/Silverthorne/Frisco: Each clinic is located within a VVMC satellite medical clinic. Each clinic is staffed by a manager and two staff therapists. The caseload is primarily orthopaedics with therapists specializing in manual therapy, occupational health, sports medicine, pilates, sports performance enhancement and functional capacity evaluations. Sports medicine, spine, extremity injuries and workers compensation are all seen within these clinics. Patients are scheduled every forty-five minutes.
Gypsum Clinic: We at Howard Head Sports Medicine are excited to have added a new clinic at the Gypsum Recreational Center. Being located in the recreational center has allowed us to utilize some of the new concepts in sports medicine rehabilitation. Examples include; aquatic physical therapy and return to sport programs with the utilization of the Gypsum Recreation Center equipment to enhance the athletes performance. Our physical therapist will work closely with a personal trainer to facilitate continuation of care in order to encourage the patent to return to full function. The Howard Head Sports Medicine clinic is located upstairs in the Gypsum Recreation Center next to the back side of the running track in a quiet, personal area, perfect for one on one patient care.
Beaver Creek/Breckenridge/Keystone: As with Eagle and Edwards, each clinic is an outpatient satellite clinic located within a VVMC satellite medical clinic. In addition, each clinic is located at the base of a ski resort and is therefore staffed for “Emergency Room Coverage” as well. These clinics are open 7 days per week during the ski season and see a dramatic increase in patients during the ski season. Denver*: The Denver clinic is the first clinic on the Front Range. It is located in downtown Denver. This clinic is open Monday through Friday for outpatient rehabilitation. The clinic is staffed with two physical therapists and one ATC (certified athletic trainer). The therapists specialize in manual therapy, orthopaedics and sports injuries; however, they see a wide variety of patients. Patients are scheduled every thirty minutes.
